CBI

Community-Based Instruction (CBI) is an educational approach that takes learning outside the traditional classroom and into real-world community settings so students can practice functional, social, and vocational skills in authentic environments.

Instead of only teaching skills in a simulated setting at school, CBI gives students opportunities to apply what they’ve learned where they will actually use it—for example, practicing money handling at a grocery store, reading bus schedules at a transit station, or ordering a meal at a restaurant.

CBI is individualized to each student’s IEP goals and coordinated with teachers, therapists, BCBAs, administrators, and our Transition Coordinator.

The Shore Center is fortunate to partner with dozens of local businesses to provide our students with authentic learning opportunities!
