Experiential Learning

Greenhouse and Hydroponics

The Shore Center greenhouse and hydroponic gardens provide a highly engaging,    hands-on environment that supports growth across multiple skill areas. Students develop academic skills by applying STEM concepts, such as measurement, data collection, and life cycle studies, while also strengthening their communication and social skills through collaborative planting, problem-solving, and sharing results with peers. The sensory-rich yet controlled setting promotes regulation and focus, offering calming visual, tactile, and olfactory experiences. Daily plant care fosters executive functioning—including planning, sequencing, and organization — alongside independence and responsibility. In addition, tasks like measuring nutrient solutions, maintaining equipment, and preparing food for consumption cultivate vocational readiness for future employment in horticulture, retail, or related fields, making the program a powerful bridge between classroom learning and real-world skills.
